The Thinking Body: Sensing Our Way to New Discoveries By Alexis Niki.
Â
A typical DD session is a whirlwind of activity. We dive into complex topics and express emergent ideas while navigating a stream of visual and auditory information: slides, faces, voices, jokes, links, and chat interactions. This environment is both exhilarating and mentally demanding. We leave with our heads buzzing, but are we in tune with the physical sensations we experience during our discussions? What if they hold valuable insights? Could a more holistic awareness of mind and body enrich our exchanges?
In this session, we'll explore the integral role the body plays in shaping our thinking. We’ll shift our focus, quiet down our usual mental chatter, and pay closer attention to our felt sensations. Drawing on my background as an Alexander Technique teacher, an Integrated Practitioner, and an intermittent meditator, I’ll guide us through an exploration to see what we notice. By engaging actively, opening ourselves to new perceptions, and observing our responses, we'll challenge our usual habits. Come ready to feel it all: boredom, frustration, discomfort, but also laughter, joy, and a deep appreciation of our embodied existence.
You’ll need an object that you can toss from hand to hand and be ok dropping. It should have a little bit of weight to it. Good options are juggling balls, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, or apples. Please also grab a few sheets of paper and a pen or pencil.
