The "Communicative Action" of Large Language Models by Gabe Elias.
ย
This Drinking Dialogue will apply the sociology of Jurgen Habermas in conversation with ChatGPT to explore his theory of System and Lifeworld, and the tension that plays out through the exercise of strategic and communicative action within these domains.
For those new to Habermas, his distinct approach to social science is grounded in a theory of language. Through a brief intellectual history, we will introduce his key concepts through themes of late modernity and communicative rationality, as well as the role technology plays in shaping the way human beings persist and recall information.
No prior social science experience required! This will be a hands-on Drinking Dialogue as participants will be encouraged to utilize ChatGPT to enable communicative action within their breakout sessions.
