Unlearning Leadership by Dr Richard Claydon

Leadership Then & Now, Part 2 – Martin, Niccolo, William by Dr Richard Claydon.

Following on from our dialogue about leadership in ancient societies, this DD will examine the development of leadership in the Abrahamic religions and regions – specifically Christendom and Islam – and how and why certain structures and practices still resonate today.

We will look at how the work of three men – Martin Luther, Nicollo Machiavelli and William Shakespeare – explored, explained and contributed to the widescale shift from the simple social belief that leadership was the divine right of kings and clergy into a far more contested and complex psychosocial phenomenon.

We will:

  1. Explore similarities and differences between Judeo-Christian and Islamic leadership, and explore the radical impact Martin Luther had on leadership in the Protestant world
  2. Use Nicollo Machiavelli’s heretical analysis of “Christian” leadership as a lens to explore organisational acquisitions and leadership ambitions today
  3. See how William Shakespeare’s exploration of the existential dilemmas of leadership arguably provide more depth and insight than anything modern researchers are coming up with today
