Cultural Capital: What's in your portfolio? By Gabe Elias
The notion of capital often extends to cover abstract metaphors… While some metaphors are useful, this Drinking Dialogue will introduce the ‘Forms of Capital’ (Bourdieu, 1986) as a framework attendees can leverage to understand their net position of socio-cultural assets with a high degree of confidence.
In Pierre Bourdieu's sociology, cultural capital is an alternative asset class we accumulate throughout our lives. It encompasses the knowledge, skills, and cultural norms that mediate social life, and plays a pivotal role in how we perceive the world, make decisions, and interact with others.
One does not just accumulate cultural capital; it is also exchanged for capital in its other forms—social or economic. To test the markets where such exchange occurs, we will dive into these topics:
- Acquisition: Extending a taxonomy of asset classes to cover cultural capital in all its species
- Valuation: Exploring arbitrage opportunities in the way cultural capital is valued by individuals and organizations
- Loss Prevention: Strategies to mitigate the risk of depreciation and other adverse outcomes
